Medical discount cards and plans are not health insurance. Discount card programs offer a reduction in the cost of medical services and prescriptions by using designated providers for an up-front fee. While many stand-alone programs offer a valid discount, others do not provide the discounts promised in their marketing materials. Buyer Beware! Use caution when purchasing healthcare discount plans. Make sure you understand the fees, terms of coverage and use, and benefits.
Gulf Coast Discount Medical Plan
An example of a discount medical plan is the Gulf Coast Discount Medical Plan, owned and operated by Manatee County Rural Health Services, a not-for-profit provider group. This discount medical plan charges a one-time registration fee and monthly membership fees, which members can finance. Membership provides discounts on medical services at participating provider locations and includes primary care, specialty services, dental, pharmacy and other medical services.
- The program is open to people who live in Sarasota County.
- People with pre-existing medical conditions can join.
- Low-income members can receive additional savings.
Remember, this is not health insurance and they do not make payment on a member’s behalf. Members are entitled to discounts at participating healthcare providers at the time of service.
Note: There are no discounts for hospital and surgical services under this plan. Members can purchase a separate limited benefit hospital and surgical coverage insurance plan. Approval and pricing is dependent upon medical underwriting, meaning that one may be denied coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.
